School Council General Election Date Set - Monday, May 6, 2024

The Minister of Education has approved the following dates to support school council elections.  

Monday, April 15 - Thursday, April 25, 2024: Nomination Period

Thursday, April 25, 2024: Close of Nominations

Saturday, May 4, 2024: Early Voting

Monday, May 6, 2024: Polling Day

School Councils have between 3-7 elected positions. General school council elections are held every two years. Education Summit - Inclusive and Special Education

In 2018-2019, the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) conducted a review of K-12 Education in Yukon. The OAG found the Department of Education did not do enough to address gaps in student outcomes and deliver programs that are inclusive and fully reflect Yukon First Nations culture and languages. In response, the department of Education undertook a review of inclusive and special education in which the findings were made available earlier this year. A work plan to advance the recommendations in the review has since been developed with the First Nations Education Commission and partners through the Advisory Committee for Yukon.

The purpose of the upcoming education summit is to review the work undertaken thus far to address the recommendations in the final report.

The government of Yukon is planning a near normal return to school for K-12 in the 2021-22 school year, with some measures continued to keep schools a low-risk priority.

First Nation School Board Framework Agreement - June 3, 2021

Yukon First Nation School Board Framework Agreement which sets out the process for creating a First Nation School Board under the Education Act, has been signed. The agreement represents an important first step for Yukon First Nations and their Citizens to assume greater authority and control of the administration and management of education programs.

Release of Yukon School Council Resource Guide - January 3, 2021

As part of its work to support school councils, the Association of Yukon School Councils, Boards & Committees (AYSCBC) is pleased to release a new resource manual to guide the work of school council members during their tenure. Serving on a School Council - Working together for students, families and school communities provides a comprehensive overview of the roles and responsibilities of school council members and includes a variety of tools, templates and tips to assist members during their time on council. 

The Association would like to thank its partners - Yukon First Nations Education Directorate (YFNED), Catholic Education Association of Yukon (CEAY), Department of Education (DOE) and many others for their invaluable contributions to the development of this resource over the past several months. We are excited to share this important document with all school council members in the months to come and look forward to the training opportunities afforded by the guide.

Revised Yukon School Council Election Dates - May 8, 2020

Due to COVID-19, School Council elections were postponed. The proposed new polling date is October 5, 2020, with the new nomination period beginning approximately September 10th. To ensure schools have active School Councils in place until the next election, council members are being asked to extend the current term of office until October 2020.

Face to Face Classes in Yukon Suspended for 19/20 School Year - April 7, 2020

Yukon government has suspended face-to-face classes for the remainder of the 19/20 school year. Student learning will continue through alternative opportunities starting on April 16th for the remainder of the school year.

Education Update While Classes are Suspended - April 3, 2020

School staff are working to plan different scenarios for delivering lessons to students, should classes be further suspended beyond April 15th. Principals and teachers have started connecting with students and families.

School Council General Elections Postponed - March 30, 2020

Due to the public health emergency in Yukon, the School Council general elections, originally scheduled for this spring, have been postponed and will be rescheduled for sometime this fall. AYSCBC will be working with Elections Yukon to discuss rescheduling the school council elections and what will need to be done in the months ahead.

2020 Yukon School Councils Spring Conference - March 20, 2020

In consideration of COVID-19 implications and the increasing impact for families, the Association of Yukon School Councils, Boards and Committees has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the 2020 Yukon School Councils Spring Conference. At this time, we are working to ensure that all aspects of the Annual General Meeting are examined and will meet the requirements as outlined in the Association By-laws and the Societies Act. Additional details will be available prior to the end of March.

We realize the importance of having an in person gathering for school councils and our partners from across the territory to network, learn and share from one another. 2020-2021 Yukon Government Budget Passes - March 19, 2020

The Government of Yukon budget for 2020-2021 passed in the Yukon Legislative Assembly on March 19, 2020. Education highlights include:

  • $218 million to modernize education and support Yukon students
  • $11.6 million for the French first language secondary school
  • $1.6 million for the Whistle Bend elementary school
  • $500 thousand for the Kluane Lake School
  • $1.8 million to work on joint education priorities with Yukon First Nation
  • $400 thousand to support the transition to Yukon University

Classes in Yukon Suspended until April 15th - March 18, 2020

At the recommendation of Yukon's Chief Medical Officer of Health Brendan Hanley, classes in Yukon will be suspended until April 15th. As referenced in the link below, superintendents and principals will be working to assess potential impacts to school programs and to plan for measures needed to ensure continued learning for students.

New Tobacco & Vaping Products Control and Regulation Act in Force - March 10, 2020

The new Tobacco & Vaping Products Control and Regulation Act, which takes effect immediately, includes:

  • Restrictions regarding the use and promotion of vaping products
  • Individuals must be 19 years old to sell or use tobacco and vaping products in Yukon
